“Small Things, Holy Things”

He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”

(Matthew 13:31-32)

I still cherish the memory of receiving a spider plant in a paper cup during an Easter service at my first church in the United States in 2008. It remains a precious Easter memory for me.

At the time, I was just beginning my life in the U.S.—starting my studies and planting a church. In the midst of uncertainty, challenges, and an unknown future, that Easter spider plant became a sign that gave me hope, faith, and the courage to move forward.

Looking back, I realize it was such a small thing—a simple plant in a paper cup. It could have easily been overlooked. And yet, God used that small gift to speak deeply into my life at just the right moment. Isn’t that often how God works?

When I moved to Wisconsin from Chicago, I brought that spider plant with me. It has become a symbol of hope in my life. I have continued to care for it to this day, and each year at Easter, I share it with others. What began as a small spider plant in a paper cup has now likely been shared with hundreds of people over the years. I pray that, just as it did for me, these plants may bring hope, faith, and courage to those who need them.

Again, this year, I would love to continue this sharing of plants—from Easter Sunday through Pentecost, and even beyond. Someone may need hope and encouragement through these small gifts.

In a world that looks for big signs and grand miracles, God so often chooses the small and the ordinary. A seed planted in the soil. A kind word offered at the right time. A quiet moment of prayer. A simple act of sharing. These are small things—but in God’s hands, they become holy things.

Jesus often spoke of the kingdom of God in this way—like a mustard seed, “the smallest of all seeds,” yet it grows into something far greater (Matthew 13:31–32). What seems small to us may carry the very presence of God’s grace. We are also reminded, “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin” (Book of Zechariah 4:10).

Perhaps there is something small in your life right now that you are tempted to overlook—a small step of faith, a small act of kindness, a small hope you are holding onto. Do not underestimate it. God is still at work in the small things. God is still bringing life, quietly and faithfully. As the Apostle Paul reminds us, “your labor in the Lord is not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:58).

And just like that little spider plant, what begins as something small may grow, multiply, and become a blessing far beyond what we can see. May we have eyes to notice these small, holy things. And may we trust that God is working through them—even now.

My beloved family in Jesus Christ, take heart—God is at work in your life. Even in the smallest acts, the quietest prayers, and the simplest offerings, God is bringing new life. What you offer in faith is never wasted, and what God begins, God will surely bring to completion (Philippians 1:6). So, keep planting, keep trusting, and keep sharing—because God is already growing something beautiful in and through you.

I hope you enjoy the fullness of God’s creation in May!

Blessings,

Pastor Jenny
