Short Teaser Paragraphs –
One night, while asleep in the temple, Samuel heard a voice calling him. It’s no surprise that he thought it was the priest calling him. So, he got up, ran to Eli’s side, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But it was not Eli who called the boy, so the priest told Samuel to go back to sleep.
Again, a voice called, “Samuel! Samuel!” Once more, he awoke and went to Eli, who again told the boy to go back to sleep. The third time, Eli realized it was God calling, so he instructed Samuel, “Go, lie down, and if someone calls out to you again, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.'”
When the voice called again, Samuel responded as Eli had instructed, “Speak, Lord. I’m listening.”
Beloved at Upper St. Croix UMC Parish, you might say we live in an age where the word of the Lord seems rare and visions of God are unclear. However, this doesn’t mean that God is silent.
Has the voice of God gone silent, or have we grown less serious about listening to God’s word?
Please join me this Sunday as we embrace this question and open ourselves to discern what God has to speak to us this day.
